Definition

What is ISO 9001?

ISO 9001 is the world's most widely adopted standard for quality management systems (QMS). It defines requirements for processes, documentation, responsibilities and continuous improvement — regardless of industry or company size.

ISO 9001 certification confirms that your organisation operates according to international quality standards. It is not legally required in Germany, but it is regularly a prerequisite in public tenders, supplier audits and B2B contracts.

The standard was last substantially revised in 2015 and extended in 2024 to cover climate action. The 2026 revision brings further focus on digital transformation and resilience.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much does ISO 9001 consulting cost?

Cost depends on company size, industry and existing maturity. For typical SMEs (5–50 employees) consulting costs range from €4,500 to €12,000. With BAFA funding the out-of-pocket cost is often €900 to €3,500. You receive a fixed-price quote within 24 hours of the first call.

How long does an ISO 9001 certification take?

From gap analysis to passing the certification audit, expect 6 to 12 weeks. The exact duration depends on the starting point: if documented processes already exist, the project is shorter. For a full greenfield build, plan for 12 weeks.

Is ISO 9001 legally mandatory in Germany?

No. ISO 9001 is not a legal requirement. It is however required in many public tenders, supplier audits by large enterprises and B2B contracts. Without the certificate, some markets are simply closed to you.

What funding is available for ISO 9001?

The BAFA programme "Förderung unternehmerischen Know-hows" subsidises consulting costs by up to 80%. Up to €2,800 in Eastern Germany and €1,750 in Western Germany. I check eligibility upfront and handle the full application.

What happens after certification?

The certificate is valid for three years. Annual surveillance audits are significantly shorter than the initial audit. After three years a recertification follows. I can support you as an external QMR on an ongoing basis, or ad hoc before each audit.

Do I have to deal with the certifier myself?

No. I obtain quotes from accredited certifiers (DEKRA, TÜV, DQS, BSI), prepare you for the audit and am present during the audit itself, on-site or remotely. No supplier selection or scheduling on your end.

Do you work with very small companies?

Yes. The smallest certified client had 3 employees. ISO 9001 scales to any company size — in small businesses, 8–12 documented processes are often enough.
