Definition

What is ISO 45001?

ISO 45001 replaced the earlier OHSAS 18001 in 2018 and is today the globally uniform standard for occupational safety management systems. It follows the High Level Structure and integrates seamlessly with ISO 9001 and 14001.

At its core is a systematic hazard assessment: workplace risks are identified, evaluated and reduced through concrete measures. The standard requires active employee participation.

For German companies, ISO 45001 complements existing occupational health legislation (ArbSchG, BetrSichV, DGUV) with an internationally recognised management framework.

Target audience

Who benefits from ISO 45001?

Manufacturing & industry

Metals, chemicals, wood, food — wherever physical work, machinery or hazardous substances play a role.

Construction & trades

General contractors increasingly require certified safety systems from their subcontractors.

Logistics & transport

Warehouse accidents, forklift operations, driving activities — an OHSMS provably reduces incident frequency.

Service providers with field work

Technicians, servicepeople, care workers — anywhere employees work away from the office.

How we work together

What ISO 45001 delivers

Fewer workplace accidents

Systematic hazard assessment reduces incident frequency provably by 20–40% in the first two years.

Employers' liability insurers reward certified systems with premium discounts.

Legal certainty

Every applicable safety obligation is documented and fulfilled — important during inspections.

Tender advantages

Public tenders and large customers recognise ISO 45001 as a qualifying criterion.

Employee retention

Credible, lived safety is a strong recruiting argument.

Integration with ISO 9001/14001

An integrated HSQE management system reduces documentation and audit effort.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much does ISO 45001 consulting cost?

For typical SMEs between €5,000 and €15,000. Cost depends on headcount, number of workplaces and existing safety maturity. BAFA funding is available.

How long does certification take?

8 to 14 weeks. The longest step is the full hazard assessment — with many workplaces this takes time.

Is ISO 45001 mandatory in Germany?

No, but the underlying safety obligations (ArbSchG, BetrSichV) are. An ISO 45001 system is the structured way to fulfil them.

Does ISO 45001 replace the safety officer (Sifa)?

No. The appointment of a safety officer under ASiG remains mandatory. ISO 45001 complements the Sifa role with a systematic management framework.

What is the benefit over pure ArbSchG compliance?

ISO 45001 makes safety measurable and continuous. Instead of isolated obligations you have a system that improves continuously — and that is externally certified.

Can ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 be built together?

Yes, that is the most efficient variant. All three standards share the High Level Structure. An integrated HSQE system saves 30–50% effort compared to separate projects.
