ISO 14001 Consulting — Environmental Management for SMEs
ISO 14001 is the international standard for environmental management systems. It helps you manage environmental impacts systematically, meet legal obligations and provide credible sustainability evidence to customers, authorities and investors.
Trusted by leading organisations
What is ISO 14001?
ISO 14001 defines the requirements for an environmental management system (EMS). Its aim is to capture a company's environmental aspects systematically, minimise risks and make improvements measurable.
The standard follows the High Level Structure and is therefore fully compatible with ISO 9001, 45001 and 27001 — an integrated management system including ISO 14001 is straightforward.
Certification is not legally required in Germany but is increasingly demanded in tenders, EU Taxonomy reports and supplier audits.

Who benefits from ISO 14001?
Manufacturing
With relevant environmental aspects (energy, waste, emissions, water) — typical in metals, chemicals, plastics, food.
Construction & engineering
Public clients increasingly require environmental evidence. ISO 14001 is often a scoring criterion.
Logistics and transport
Fleet emissions, route optimisation, packaging reduction — ISO 14001 makes improvements measurable.
CSRD-obligated SMEs
The new EU sustainability reporting requirement (CSRD) is significantly easier to fulfil with an ISO 14001 system.
How we build your environmental management system
From your first question to the certificate on the wall — and beyond.
Map environmental aspects
We identify every relevant environmental impact of your operations — direct (emissions, waste) and indirect (supply chain, products).
Build a legal register
All applicable environmental laws and obligations are captured and assessed systematically. This is the single most audited point.
Environmental objectives & programmes
Based on the analysis we define measurable environmental targets and concrete improvement actions.
Documentation & training
Processes are lean-documented, employees trained. Your team knows who does what and when.
Internal audit
I verify the system's effectiveness and prepare you for the certification audit.
Certification audit
I accompany the external audit, coordinate the certifier and support on follow-up queries.
What ISO 14001 delivers
Legal certainty
Systematic capture of all environmental obligations — no surprises during authority inspections.
Lower costs
Energy, waste and material consumption become measurable. Typical savings: 5–15% in the first two years.
CSRD-readiness
ISO 14001 data flows directly into sustainability reporting.
Access to tenders
Public clients and large customers increasingly require ISO 14001.
ISO 9001 integration
Same High Level Structure — one integrated management system saves work and duplication.
Employee retention
Credible environmental commitment is an argument in recruiting.
Up to 80 % of consulting costs reimbursed.
BAFA subsidises SME consulting via the "Förderung unternehmerischen Know-hows" programme. I handle the entire application.
"Energy and results convinced us. From first contact to Stage 2 audit in six weeks — only possible because Jonathan began the work even before the contract was signed."
Common questions.
How much does ISO 14001 consulting cost?
SME consulting costs typically range from €5,000 to €14,000. With BAFA funding the out-of-pocket cost drops to €1,000–€3,500. I frequently combine ISO 14001 with ISO 9001, which creates synergies.
How long does an environmental management system take to build?
Depending on complexity, 8 to 16 weeks. Manufacturing operations with many environmental aspects take longer than service companies. The gap analysis gives you a realistic plan.
Can ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 be built together?
Yes, that is the recommended approach. Both standards share the High Level Structure, so documentation, audits and management review run integrated. This saves 30–40% effort compared to separate projects.
Which legal environmental obligations are checked?
The legal register covers BImSchG, KrWG, WHG, EEG, AwSV, waste law, hazardous substances regulation and industry-specific rules. I work with specialised lawyers where needed.
Is ISO 14001 required for CSRD reporting?
Not directly. But the CSRD requires traceable environmental data and processes — exactly what ISO 14001 delivers. A certified EMS significantly simplifies CSRD reporting.
How often do audits take place?
After initial certification, annual surveillance audits follow, with a recertification every three years. Effort decreases significantly after the first year.
